Tulsa Upends UTEP in 2004 Season Finale
Tulsa's Maren Genow was the winning pitcher in both games as the Golden Hurricane won a doubleheader from UTEP, 4-0 and 3-2, on Saturday at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex.
Genow tossed the complete-game shutout in game one. She scattered five hits while walking none and fanning 10. The Golden Hurricane scored all of its runs in the first three innings. Tulsa took a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by Katie Torres in the first inning, and added single runs in the second and the third. UTEP had runners on first and second with one out in the fourth inning, but Gracie Borjas and Jennifer Garcia each struck out to end the threat. In the nightcap, Genow came on in relief of starter Ami Day to pitch the final two innings and record the victory. Tulsa went ahead 2-0 in the third inning before the Miners rallied to tie the contest. Denise Emmons launched her first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, in the fourth inning. UTEP knotted the game in the sixth when Laura Joiner drew a walk and later scored on a double by Kristin Hardy. However, the Golden Hurricane loaded the bases in the sixth and took the lead for good on Lindsay Galloway's sacrifice fly to right, plating Stephanie Sliepen. UTEP ended its inaugural season of softball with an 8-46 record (1-21 in Western Athletic Conference play). Tulsa, which is ranked 25th in this week's USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) poll, climbed to 45-18 overall and 16-5 in league action. |
