UTEP Soccer Cracks NCAA Central Region Rankings
Nov. 4, 2008
For the first time in 2008 and the program-record fifth straight year the UTEP soccer team is ranked in the NCAA Central Region, according to the latest ratings released by SoccerBuzz.com. The Miners check in 13th in the most-recent edition of the poll, with back-to-back victories over Rice (then 13th in region) and then Colorado College (then eighth in region) factoring in.
Placement in this poll is nothing new for head coach Kevin Cross, though, with his teams now having achieved the feat in six of his eight years. Prior to his appointment, UTEP managed the feat just twice out of a possible six years.
The Miners are certainly deserving of the recognition, evidenced by a record of 13-6-1 during the regular season. The Orange and Blue out-scored the opposition by a margin of 12 (35-23), and was an impressive 8-5 in matches decided by one goal.
UTEP enjoyed three different unbeaten streaks of at least three games, including a campaign-best five successive wins to open the year.
The Orange and Blue will be back in action against Colorado College in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA tournament at 1:30 p.m. MST on Wednesday.
