Former UTEP standout Holly Cohen was named as an assistant soccer coach by head coach Kevin Cross on Wednesday.

"I am very excited about adding Holly Cohen to our staff. She compliments the current staff very well," said Cross. "Holly rewrote the UTEP soccer record book as a player and is one of the best soccer players to ever come out of El Paso which will help us in recruiting. She will be a great recruiter, a hard worker and has a strong tactical mind for the game.

"Holly was 45 minutes away from winning a WAC Championship, and she told me that her ultimate goal is to help UTEP soccer win a championship," Cross added. "Out of all the candidates I spoke to, no one wanted the job more nor had such a passion for UTEP Soccer."

A 2003 UTEP graduate with a degree in criminal justice, Cohen was one of the top offensive Miners in program history. She ended her two-year career as the school record holder for goals (31) and game winning goals (nine) in just 34 games with the Miners. Her 71 points rank as the second-highest total in school history.

Cohen was a major contributor during the 2002 season, when UTEP finished with a program-best 16-3 record. Her 22 goals helped UTEP lead the nation with 84 team goals (4.42 gpm). She ranked fourth in the NCAA with 2.83 points per match and sixth with 1.22 goals per game.

By the end of the 2002 season, Cohen had set the school single-season records for goals (22), points (51), game winning goals (six) and shots (96). Her totals for goals and points also led the WAC.

She was named to the SoccerBuzz.com second team All-Central Region, first team All-WAC, WAC All-Tournament Team and the WAC Tournament MVP.

Her weekly honors during the 2002 season included being named to the SoccerBuzz.com Elite Team of the Week, Soccer America's Team of the Week and was the WAC Player of the Week twice.

A standout in the classroom as well, she was named to the Verizon Academic All-America and All-District teams. She additionally was named Academic All-WAC.

A second team All-WAC selection in 2001, Cohen scored nine goals and two assists for 20 points.

Cohen closed her collegiate career racking up 41 goals and 23 assists for 105 career points between UTEP and Arizona State.

This past spring, she finished her athletic eligibility as a member of the first-ever softball team in school history.

The El Paso native graduated from Franklin High School where she piled up 392 points in four years by scoring 173 goals and 46 assists. She was first team All-State, District, City and Region as a junior and senior. She was the El Paso Times Player of the Year in 1999 and 1998 and named Miss Soccer 1999 by the El Paso Parks and Recreation Department.
