UTEP Ready To Battle I-10 Rival NMSU On Thursday

Nov. 19, 2008

The UTEP women's basketball team returns to the court against I-10 rival New Mexico state in a 7:05 p.m. showdown at the Don Haskins Center on Thursday. The meeting is the first of two on the year between the programs, with the Miners heading to Las Cruces on Dec. 7.

Pom-poms and Miner cheer cards will be given away to fans who attend the game.

The Miners (0-2) are coming off a gut-wrenching 55-54 overtime loss to UC Irvine on Sunday. NMSU carries a mark of 1-1 on the campaign after being dispatched by Cal Poly, 75-53, on Sunday as well.

While the Aggies certainly will provide a stiff test, if UTEP can find a way to pick up a triumph the rewards would be plenty. Not only would it put the Miners in the win column for the initial time of the 2008-09 campaign, but it would also allow them to continue their recent dominance against the Aggies. UTEP has registered three straight sweeps of the Aggies and has claimed eight of the past nine match ups.

The Miners have been a balanced bunch offensively early on this year, with sophomore Brittnay Jones' 9.5 points per game leading the way. She is followed by junior Jareica Hughes (8.5 ppg), while freshmen Dietra Caldwell and Fannie Goodwin are contributing 7.5 and 6.0 ppg., respectively.

Junior-college transfer Marta Micula has been the top rebounder, pulling down 7.0 rebounds per contest. Close behind in that category are Jones and Timika Williams, with each accounting for 5.0 rpg.

Live video and audio for the game is available online via the all access link at www.utepathletics.com. Stats through gametracker can be accessed through the Miners' homepage as well.
