Palmer Looks Sharp in First Lengthy Scrimmage of Spring
Senior quarterback Jordan Palmer was sharp in UTEP's first full scrimmage of the spring, completing 13 of 18 passes for 121 yards on Friday in the Sun Bowl.
After three of his first four pass attempts fell incomplete, Palmer connected on 12 of his last 14 tries, including a string of eight consecutive completions at one point during the scrimmage. The Miners scored one touchdown -- on a six-yard pass from Kyle Wright to Tufick Shadrawy -- and Reagan Schneider boomed four field goals including a 42-yarder. Redshirt freshman quarterback Brandis Dew finished 10 for 14 passing for 59 yards, and junior Lorne Sam was five for 12 for 34 yards. "I was pleased with all the quarterbacks," UTEP coach Mike Price said. "The ball was on the ground too many times. Too many penalties, too many turnovers. Our running backs ran well, we just want to see them hold onto the ball a little better." Sam threw a pair of interceptions, with junior corner Josh Ferguson and redshirt freshman linebacker Landon Goodwel both recording takeaways. Senior linebacker Jeremy Jones led the stop troops with eight tackles, while Goodwell added seven and senior linebacker Jason McQuay five. UTEP's ground game was held in check. Sophomore Brandon Jackson was the leading rusher with eight carries for 28 yards. Junior Marcus Thomas carried the ball seven times for 11 yards. The Miners showed depth at wide receiver despite the absence of senior Johnnie Lee Higgins, who did not play while continuing to recover from an injury. Redshirt freshman Dustin Bell reeled in five catches for 42 yards, and senior Daniel Robinson -- who also redshirted the 2005 season -- added five receptions for 35 yards. Walk-on freshmen Jeff Moturi and Shadrawy both had impressive catches, with Moturi landing the long reception of the day off a 30-yard pass from Wright. |
